WHAT IS OPTICAL CALCITE? Optical calcite is a carbonate mineral. It is also known as Iceland Spar and some historians believe it was also known as Sunstone. Optical calcite is double refractive, meaning objects appearing through it will look as though they are in two places at once. The largest found single crystal of calcite has the weight at 250 tons.
WHY IT'S AWESOME? Lost at sea? Stories tell of Vikings using Optical Calcite as a navigator because it can polarize light, allowing travelers to always be able to find the sun, even in poor weather. Soil helper? Calcite is also used for soil stabilization, soil remediation and repair.
